Green Terror fans who check in here regularly have probably grown accustomed to reading Carroll County Times articles by Patrick Brannan. Patrick has moved on to a different position over at the Times, and Josh Land, who had covered the Terror from time to time, has taken over the McDaniel beat. He has had a few previous entries, but I haven't been to the blog for awhile now. While we'll all miss the professionalism and sensitivity Patrick brought to the table, there is no reason to anticipate any drop off in either vein with the addition of Josh.

Is the buzz back?

Hours after a discussion with Kristy Costa about a bowling ball of unknown origins that once bounced down a staircase to my feet, a tennis ball of equally unknown origins hit the top of my shoe in the lobby of the Gill Center.

I didn’t think much of it at the time. Bored by the prospects of pushing electronic paper, I came to the gym early to set up in anticipation of Wednesday night’s showdown with the Bullets. The ball seemed to me like a useful distraction to bounce off of the wall, floor, and bleachers of the press deck until the good folks from WTTR arrived.

So I did.

Then, at about 6:00 p.m., shortly after the doors were opened to the nearly 600 spectators on hand, I saw a glint of green out of the corner of my eye. A dropped dollar bill.

The breaks were beating my way, but I didn’t think much of it. Too many people in the building to ask if they lost a buck, so I pocketed it towards a future caffeinated purchase.

All of these little things didn’t amount to much, mild amusement and a potential cup of joe.

And then came the tip off.

For the first time this season, the Gill Center felt like the Gill Center does for women’s basketball games. The Green Terror looked like the Green Terror does for basketball games. The buzz, the energy, or however you choose to define the intangible, was back in full force.

Maybe it’s Steve-O and Kacanich.

Whatever it is, it resulted in Katy Powell’s career high. It was evident in Amy Watson’s dead-eye accuracy on the first three-point attempt of the junior’s career. The balls that may have bounced in either direction throughout the regular season started bouncing McDaniel’s way.

The intensity that has been lacking since, well, losing at Scranton in last year’s NCAA tourney had returned. After a regular season of basketball that provided about as much excitement as finding a tennis ball in the lobby, the team that I had internally written off as a squad built for next year finally gave me something to write about this year.

The team on the floor last night was the team the Terror partisan has been looking for all season long. If it was a season long opossum act, they played it to perfection. If last night was lady luck just stopping in at the Gill to rehash some memories, we’ll all just recall that success is measured by consistency over time, and this year’s Terror hasn’t been overly consistent.

Saturday will provide answers for believers and skeptics alike. With Ron Rohn, the coach of the Mules in attendance last night, you had better believe his team will be ready for McDaniel’s arrival, intensity and all. That sort of thing never stifled the swagger of Terror teams past. The swagger of Terror teams past never waited so long to show itself.

So I think back to my ball and my buck.

Maybe they were just coincidental with one of the world’s most superstitious sports teams at least temporary restoration. Maybe they were signs for a world class doubter whose mind had begun shifting towards ground balls on the lax pitch and diamonds of spring. Or maybe they were just a ball and a buck found by a world class pessimist hanging on to a shred of hope.

Either way, me, my tennis ball and my currently unspendable buck are looking forward to a drive to Muhlenberg. By the way, if you went to your wallet and found you were a buck short this morning, I’ll gladly send it back to you.

A new place for civilized discussion...

The folks at D3Football and D3hoops.com continue to provide service to Division III athletes. In addition to their outstanding standard coverage for the aformentioned sports, Pat Coleman and company have added discussion forums for men's and women's lacrosse and baseball.

The lacrosse board launched at 1:30 PM today, while baseball has been up for several weeks, and is showing a decent volume of activity, though no discussion on the Centennial Conference as of yet.

Why you Persist

The 15th player on the basketball roster. The 99th guy on the football roster. The 32nd baseball player. The seventh singles player.

Practice fodder. Right?

The odds of that player becoming a regular starter are slim. The odds of achieving greatness are slimmer. Accomplishments are generally relegated to mop up minutes, or as we used to refer to it, the 30:30:30 club (30 points ahead, 30 points behind, 30 seconds left).

Yet these kids show up everyday. They practice their guts out, often going harder than the “star player,” and for what? There is the love of competition, love of the team, and determination to match the perspiration.

There is also the chance.

That chance is the fleeting glory of sacking the quarterback, or fanning the league’s most ferocious power hitter. That chance is that a coach will see in the athlete precisely what the athlete sees in his or herself.

When the chance comes, not everyone is ready to embrace it. Some are. Devin Keeny was.

A spate of injuries in a short period conspired with several consecutive losses to produce Devin Keeny as a starter. The same Devin Keeny who saw all of 20 minutes of action spread out over 11 games in 2004. The same Devin Keeny who was asked to fill out a form handed to freshmen for the media guide because none of his 20 minutes coincided with the flash of a camera.

That was prior to the regime change in Westminster.

A year ago, Keeny was overlooked as a viable contributor to the squad. In the Bob Flynn era, McDaniel is 2-0 with Keeny as a starter. That is why the last guy on the roster keeps at it. Keeny’s story is just beginning the second chapter. He has proved throughout the season that he is a valuable contributor, and as a starter, he is averaging 12.5 points per game. He doubled his previous career high of nine points (established in his first career start in the game prior) with 18 first half points against Swarthmore.

He finished that game with 20 points, and watched much of Swarthmore’s second half comeback bid from the bench, exhausted from nearly matching his 2004 minutes in one half of a game. The lead built while Keeny was on the floor dissipated while he was off.

Maybe he can’t keep posting numbers like he did against Swat. Maybe he can. Where his story goes from here is yet to be determined, but given a chance, the guy who was 14th or 15th on the roster executed, and earned the consideration of fans, coaches, writers, and broadcasters he knew he was capable of earning.

His victory on Saturday was not just a win in basketball for him and his teammates. It is the truly All-American experience of pulling yourself up by the bootstraps. It was a victory for every athlete who has been last on the roster and the last to leave practice.

That’s why the last guy bangs his head against the wall everyday. Now get back to work.

A Sad Day for Carroll County Sports

I write today bearing bad news for Carroll County Residents and Green Terror fans. Adelphia Cable 3 in Carroll County is set to go off of the air. The wrangling and maneuvering behind the scenes is more than I know about or care to get into. The bottom line is Carroll County’s athletes, both high school and college, are being left out in the cold.

In my five years here, Jeff Rich and his gang in the red shirts (one of which you see behind the camera at left) have covered football, men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, men’s and women’s lacrosse, baseball, and softball on the game of the week. They scooped up all of the other sports in their weekly show Sidelines, which introduced our athletes to the rest of the county.

In the nearly 20 years that Channel 3, under the Adelphia or Prestige Cable banner, has covered local sports, they carried on in a professional manner that far exceeded similar stations of their size. Their content and production value demonstrated the results of their hard work and can-do attitude.

While I won’t miss the barrage of emails and phone calls that flow in for about a week after a McDaniel game has aired as a Game of the Week, I believe that speaks volumes about the quality of work the folks at Adelphia carried out.

None of our homegrown athletes have known a time in their life when hearing Bryan McLean’s calls of their youth or rec. league, high school, or college game wasn’t a possibility.

We are fortunate in this County that WTTR carries on with what the Associated Press has deemed Maryland’s best local sports coverage over the radio, and now the Internet through Broadcastmonsters.com, but the wrestler with the upset pin will no longer have a professional copy to one day show their little grapplers.

We are also fortunate that McLean will serve as the voice of McDaniel men’s and women’s lacrosse over the Internet, but to the high school kids around the county, and the kids on our campus, the chance to be seen is gone.

That is unfortunate.

So to my friends at Adelphia, I thank you for showing up hours before kickoff, or tipoff, or faceoff. I thank you for letting me use your generator to power our press box when a car accident knocked out power last year. I think you for giving our small school athletes a small taste of the big time experience.

I thank you for providing memories for our athletes, and often more importantly, their parents and grandparents who cannot always cover the ground to be here.

Terror Trio Earns Honors on the Grid

Three members or the McDaniel College football team's defense were named to the All-South Region Team by Don Hansen of Don Hansen's Football Gazette.

Linebacker Ron Ringgold, defensive back Drew Abbamonte, and lineman Chase Noll, were named to Hansen's mythical squad. All three players had been previously selected for All-Centennial First Team honors, while Ringgold was named to the D3football.com All-South Region Second Team.

Ringgold, a middle linebacker, was named to the region's first team. He recorded 136 tackles, the fifth most prolific season of stops in McDaniel’s football history. His 72 solo tackles represents the fifth best season on record in that category. Amongst his tackles were four sacks. He also forced a fumble and recorded three interceptions and tacked on 77 return yards, 41 of which came on a touchdown return in the win against Ursinus.

Abbamonte, a second team pick in the secondary, was a constant disruption to opponents’ passing game nabbing six passes for 68 return yards. He also broke up 11 passes this season. The junior free safety recorded 82 tackles to finish second on the squad in that category. 51 of his tackles were unassisted efforts with four resulting in a loss of yards.

Noll earned an Honorable Mention after recording a team-high six-sacks from his nose guard position. His sacks resulted in 44 yards of losses for McDaniel’s opposition. He recorded 44 tackles, forced two fumbles and blocked a kick in 2005.

McDaniel finished an injury-riddled season at 5-5. That mark included a pair of overtime losses and a last minute field goal loss at Gettysburg.

Terror in the Land of Magic
The McDaniel College Green Terror men's basketball spent a few days in the sun in Orlando. The Terror took in the sights of Central Florida, found themselves on the floor rubbing elbows with the Magic dancers prior to the Timberwolves-Magc game they took in that evening, and even found time to play a pair of basketball games in the Land of Magic Classic as well.

Battling the flu and a pair of outstanding opponents, McDaniel did not pick up any "W's" on the trip, but from a team perspective, the journey was still a success.

"Our seniors deserved this experience. The experience of extended travel as a team was a first for them," said Head Coach, Bob Flynn. "It was a terrific tournament with plenty of time as a team for 'R & R'."

"The final two days of the trip we were able to hang out together as a team, mostly poolside, and enjoy one another’s company. With a new coach and five freshmen, the opportunity to be together off the court in that type of setting will only strengthen the great chemistry and camaraderie this team already possesses."

Terror Grapplers Ranked 23rd in Latest Poll
Howard and Winfield Ranked

The McDaniel College wrestling team is ranked 23rd in the nation by the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Poll. Two McDaniel wrestlers, Tony Howard and Andrew Winfield, are nationally ranked in their weight class.

Howard is ranked second in the nation behind Augsburg's Ryan Valek at 165 pounds, while Winfield is ranked sixth in the nation at 174 pounds. The Green Terror has been ranked in the top 30 in each of the three polls released this season, climbing as high as 22nd. This marks the second consecutive poll which has both Howard and Winfield ranked individually.

McDaniel Trio Earns All-Region Honors

Two soccer players and one football player at McDaniel College earned the distinction of All-Region status following the 2005 campaigns.

Scott Morrow, the 2005 Centennial Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Year, was named All-Mid Atlantic Region, First Team, by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), while his teammate, goalkeeper Andrew Wu was named to the NSCAA’s Second Team in the region.

D3football.com named Ron Ringgold to its All-South Region Second Team.

On the soccer field, Morrow anchored a defensive unit that limited its opponents to 0.78 goals per game. McDaniel shut out the opposition in 13 of its 21 games this season, including a nine-game stretch in October and November.

Morrow’s unit provided the first line of defense, while Wu, who also earned All-Centennial First Team honors, served as a dominant backstop. The senior keeper was in net from start to finish in nine of McDaniel’s 13 shutouts and posted a 0.39 goals against average. He worked 752:42 consecutive scoreless minutes during a stretch of the season.

The Green Terror soccer team finished the season with a mark of 14-4-3.

WTTR AM 1470 has released its broadcast schedule for the 2005-2006 basketball season. The slate includes 15 games on seven dates beginning with next Thursday's women's Centennial showdown with Mason-Dixon line rival Gettysburg. All games on WTTR will be simulcast live via the Internet at BroadcastMonsters.com, a company founded and operated by McDaniel graduate Sean O'Connor.

Franz Named Centennial Player of the Week

Franz led the Terror to a 2-0 week, averaging 17.0 points and shot 44% from beyond the three-point arc. She tallied 10 assists, four steals and three blocks on the week.

It's Franz's first time earning Player of the Week honors from the Centennial Conference. She had been named to the Weekly Honor Roll on three previous occasions.

The Flynn Era Looks Different

It officially began at 7:02 p.m. according to the clock beamed into my cell phone by the folks at Verizon. It really began with about 2:32 left in the first half of McDaniel's season opener with Frostburg, which was played out in the tight confines of Goldfarb Gymnasium at Johns Hopkins. It might be the most important 2:32 seconds of basketball played by the Terror men in a pair of decades.

Trailing by 13, the McDaniel College men's basketball team stepped out of character -- a character now older than the majority of the roster. Instead of saying, "here we go again," the team decided it was time to get going.

McDaniel embarked on a 9-0 run down to the buzzer. Josh McKay, Chris Prior, and Chris Rutland supplied the answer McDaniel has long needed in the form of points, and more importantly, the undaunted team supplied play with a purpose, thus beginning the Bob Flynn era.

The Terror kicked off the season with a win in a tournament. That was nothing new for McDaniel. But a second win followed a tough loss to a tough Hopkins team. That second win was McDaniel's first defeat of Washington College since 1993, and the Terror wrapped up third place in the eight-team Pride of Maryland Tournament with a 2-1 start.

That record marks the best start for a McDaniel men's team since the 2001-2002 season, before any of the current players were on the roster. None of the current players need to look any further than the newest coach on the staff, Sam Anstead, to find out how that season ended up. After beginning the season at 2-0 and winning three of the first four, McDaniel went 3-18 the rest of the way.

As the cliche goes, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. If you're McDaniel, its about what you do between now and the finish line that will continue to set the tone for the future of this beleaguered program.

The reality of the situation is that nothing about this team resembles that '01-'02 team. This version of the Terror is most assuredly going to get its wins under the senior leadership of Chris Rutland and Mike Dipiero, but it is going to take its share of lumps as well.

The promise of McKay's soft touch on a previously undisclosed long-range shot, the confidence of Ryan Finch's pinpoint and timely shooting, and the raw excitement supplied by Chad Arrington's energetic and explosive play will combine with the hustle and personality imbued on the team by the leadership and court vision of Dipero and Rutland to make McDaniel a formidable foe right now. That should make the final tally of wins and losses far more favorable than the single digit and teen record McDaniel fans have begrudgingly grown accustomed to.

Away from the wins and losses columns, the much talked about and statistically immeasureable moral victory was in the fight. Over-matched and trailing Johns Hopkins, a team that has been bandied about in Centennial Conference Championship talk, the Terror drained three after three in a desperate comeback bid that may have been successful if the game was a few minutes longer. It wasn't, but the next two assured meetings should be interesting.

The determination in that bid was matched only by the calm demeanor up and down the floor, and up and down the bench. The Terror never got wide-eyed by the double-digit leads it faced in two games this weekend. The panic button that used to be pressed pretty quickly was never even considered. They just kept coming.

And a couple of years from now, when McDaniel's name is tossed around with Franklin & Marshall, Johns Hopkins, Ursinus, and Gettysburg in playoff talk, think back to 7:02 on Friday, November 18, 2005, and about the events that transpired about a half-an-hour later in Goldfarb, because you can't get to where you are going without the first step. The Terror took a big one that night in a span of 2:32, it didn't quit.

Seven Terror Gridders Named All-CC; Ringgold Unanimous First Team Choice

Seven players on the McDaniel College football team were named to the 2005 All-Centennial Conference football squad on Monday. Five players on defense and a pair on offense were named to the league’s First and Second Teams. McDaniel was not represented on the Honorable Mention listing.

Junior Drew Abbamonte (Damascus, MD / Damascus) along with seniors Chase Noll (Wilmington, DE / McKean) and Ron Ringgold (Aberdeen, MD / Aberdeen), were named to the defensive first team.

Abbamonte was a constant disruption to opponents’ passing game nabbing six passes for 68 return yards. He also broke up 11 passes this season. The junior free safety recorded 82 tackles to finish second on the squad in that category. 51 of his tackles were unassisted efforts with four resulting in a loss of yards.

Noll recorded a team-high six-sacks from his nose guard position resulting in 44 yards of losses for McDaniel’s opposition. He recorded 44 tackles, forced two fumbles and blocked a kick in 2005.

Ringgold, a middle linebacker, recorded 136 tackles, the fifth most prolific season of stops in McDaniel’s football history. His 72 solo tackles represents the fifth best season on record in that category. Amongst his tackles were four sacks. He also forced a fumble and recorded three interceptions and tacked on 77 return yards, 41 of which came on a touchdown return in the win against Ursinus.

Defensive back Andy Lee (Bethesda, MD / Walt Whitman) and punter Corey Allen (Rockville, MD / Magruder) were each named to the Second Team Defense. Working opposite of Abbamonte, the strong safety was third on the team in tackles with 66 stops. He broke up 6 passes and intercepted another to go along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Allen finished his career as the only punter to pass the 8,000-yard barrier in Green Terror history. The senior kicked 77 times for a school record 2,824 yards averaging 36.7 yards per punt. Allen dropped 17 kicks inside his opponent’s 20-yardline this season, leaving several on the 1-yardline, including once in each of the season’s final to weeks. He boomed a career long punt of 68 yards at Muhlenberg this season.

McDaniel’s two offensive players honored were both juniors. Offensive lineman Rob Jones (Middle River / EVT) and Wide Receiver Chris Martin (Clarksville, MD / River Hill) were each named Second Team All-Centennial.

Jones centered a line that afforded McDaniel runners 3.4 yards per carry in 2005, while Martin was second on McDaniel’s roster with 26 receptions and 241 yards for 9.3 yards per catch.

The Green Terror finished the season at 5-5 marking the first time since 1996 the team finished at or below .500.

Triplin is the second player from Johns Hopkins and the first in 20 years to win the Centennial Offensive Player of the Year award. QB Mark Campbell was the other honoree in 1985.
McCall is the second consecutive player from Muhlenberg to win the Centennial Defensive Player of the Year award, following in the footsteps of Ryan Peer.
Kline is the first freshman to be named to the first team since Dickinson's Scott Blum in 2001.
McCall becomes the 30th player in the 23-year history of the Conference to earn first-team All-Centennial honors three times. Ringgold and Stearrett were also first-team repeaters from 2004.
Six players were unanimous first-team selections - Lyons, Triplin, Cook, Luke, Ringgold and Smith.
Four students were also named to the Conference Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes sophomores, junior and seniors who are key performers and have a 3.40 cumulative grade point average or higher.

Ward Named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II First Team

Senior eligible for Academic All-America Status

With a weighted Grade Point Average north of 4.0, and a major in chemistry, McDaniel College women's soccer defender Becky Ward was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II First Team. The squad was voted on by Ward will move on to the national ballot for Academic All-America status.

Ward was named to the Academic All-District II Third team a year ago.

The senior from Columbia, Maryland is a graduate from Long Reach High School, and started all 18 of McDaniel's games this season. She anchored a defensive unit that posted five shutouts in 2005. Her Green Terror squad put up a 7-10-1 mark.

Unflat Named 1st Team All Conference

Senior Dani Unflat was one of 4 McDaniel players to be named to the all Centennial Conference Field Hockey team. Unflat led the Terror in scoring this season with 10 goals and 7 assists which was good for 27 points. Unflat was a 2nd team selection in 2004.

McDaniel's other all-conference performers were Senior Nicole Mele, Senior Lindsay Ricks, and Junior Colleen Nugent. Mele, 2nd team all-confence, played in and started all 17 games for the Terror and led a defense that ranked third in the conference in goals against average. Ricks, 2nd team, started all but one game for the Terror this season and tallied 3 goals and 6 assists to help lead the conference's second best scoring team. Nugent, HM all-conference, turned in a good season for the Terror. She tallied 6 goals, including a game winner, and one assist for 13 points.

Morrow Named Conference Player of the Year

McDaniel junior back Scott Morrow has been selected as the Conference's Men's Soccer Player of the Year in balloting by the CC's 10 head coaches. Morrow was a conistent stopper on a stingy defense. He led the Green Terror defense to a Centennial-best 11 shutouts this season and his team to the top seed for this weekend's Conference championship tournament. Morrow was also a first-team selection last season.

The Terror also placed 3 other players on the first team. Senior forward Todd Knepper led the Terror with 7 assists on the season and also tallied 4 goals. This marks the second consecutive season that Knepper has been a first team selection. Senior Midfielder Thomas Kane was also a first team selection for McDaniel. Kane led the Terror in scoring with a team high 9 goals and added 3 assists for 21 points. Kane was also a first team selection in 2003 and the Centennial Conference Player of the Year that year as well. Senior goalie Andrew Wu was also named to the first team. Wu was outstanding in net all season recording an amazing 8 shutouts on the season and posted a 12-2-2 record.

McDaniel Pair Named Players of the Week
They're both accomplished seniors staring down the end of their careers. One kicks an odd shaped ball, the other stops a round ball kicked. They have two things in common: 1. Last week, no one did their job better. 2. The Centennial Conference agreed.

Corey Allen was named the Special Teams Player of the Week on the gridiron. The most prolific punter in McDaniel's history punted 9 times for 340 yards (37.8 ypp). He boomed a long of 47 yards, and dropped 3 inside of the 20, including a punt left on the Dips one yardline.

Andrew Wu was named the CC's co-Player of the week on the soccer pitch. It's the third time this season the Westminster native has been recognized by the Conference. He ran his amazing scoreless streak to 593:49. McDaniel would like an additional 180:00 scoreless minutes out of Wu this weekend as the Terror hosts the Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.

Eiser Named 2nd Team All-Conference
Senior Krista Eiser was named to the All-Centennial Conference second team. Eiser led the Terror this season in blocks with 101. She also finished 3rd on the team in kills with 208. Eiser finished 4th on the team with 32 total service aces.

Mullen Named All-Conference

Junior Goalkeeper Michelle Mullen was named to the All-Centennial Conference 2nd team. Mullen played in and started all 18 games for the Terror this season and posted 5 shutouts to go along with a .764 save percentage. Mullen had a season record of 7-10-1. This marks the second year in a row that Mullen has made all conference. She was a first team selection in 2004.

CENTENNIAL FOOTBALL WELCOMES TWO NEW MEMBERS

Juniata, Moravian Colleges Join as Associate Members in 2007

LANCASTER, Pa. -- October 26, 2005 -- The Centennial Conference announced Wednesday that Juniata College and Moravian College have accepted invitations to join the Conference as associate members in the sport of football.

The addition of Juniata and Moravian gives the Conference nine members that sponsor the sport of football - Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Johns Hopkins, McDaniel, Muhlenberg, and Ursinus.

"The strong academic reputations of the two institutions were attractive to the Conference's Presidents Council," said Jerome D. Schnydman, Executive Assistant to the President of Johns Hopkins University and chair of the Council. "The solid tradition in football and the commitment to the legacy of the scholar-athlete at Juniata and Moravian were also deciding factors as we enhance the Conference both in the sport of football and its overall membership."

"We are thrilled to add Juniata and Moravian to our football family," said Steven F. Ulrich, Executive Director of the Conference. "The combination of outstanding academics and a commitment to excellence on the gridiron football makes Juniata and Moravian a perfect fit for our Conference."

Both institutions have a long and storied tradition of excellence on the gridiron. Juniata played in the Tangerine Bowl (now known as the Capital One Bowl) in 1956 and played for the national championship in 1973 against Wittenberg in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Chuck Knox, the former NFL head coach for the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks, is a 1954 graduate of Juniata. The Eagles have had three consensus first-team All-Americans since 1983, while also producing two first-team Academic All-Americans and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.

The Greyhounds were in the NCAA tournament in 1988 and 1993 and have produced one consensus first-team All-American, two first-team Academic All-Americans and one NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. Moravian head coach Scot Dapp is the president of the American Football Coaches Association - just the fifth Division III coach to head the organization. He will serve as an assistant coach for the East team at the 2006 Hula Bowl. Dapp has led Moravian to 14 winning seasons out of his 18 years at the helm.

The two schools will begin round-robin play in the Centennial Conference beginning with the 2007 season.

The McDaniel College wrestling team will enter the 2005-2006 wrestling season ranked 25th in the nation in the Preseason version of the Brute - Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll. Senior Tony Howard, a 2005 All-American is ranked second in the nation at 174 pounds entering the year. He finished in fifth place at the 2005 NCAA Championships.

Wu Earns Centennial Player of the Week Honors

Westminster native Andrew Wu recorded his fifth and sixth shut outs of the season last week, and the 20th of his career, earning Centennial Conference Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. The milestone came as a result of McDaniel's 2-0 win over Swarthmore on Sunday. As an added bonus, Wu and his clan move into first place in the Centennial Conference with Gettysburg looming on the season's slate.

Wu has surrendered a single goal in the month of October. Back on the first day of the month, he allowed Muhlenberg's Jonathan Kliewer to score in a 1-0 loss. Since that goal, Wu has played 393:49 scoreless minutes in the McDaniel net. He has surreneded just two goals since September 24th, and his Green Terror has notched five consecutive shut outs, and seven in the past nine games.

Ringgold Named Defensive Player of the Week

Record 17 tackles on your own, and someone will notice you. Tack on seven assisted tackles and a sack, and you end up as the Centennial Conference's Player of the Week. Ron Ringgold, an All-Centennial first team pick a year ago, was named the Centennial Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career. The senior out of Aberdeen, Maryland, tied a 17-year old school record for solo tackles in a game. His 24 tackle effort marks only the sixth time a player has recorded 20 or more stops in a game in McDaniel's football history.

Caitlin Potter recorded three goals in two games as the Terror defeated 16th-ranked Franklin Marshall and Swarthmore last week. Terror Cross Country Breaking New Grounds
For the first time in the history of the program, the McDaniel College Men's Cross Country team is garnering votes in the NCAA Mideast Region Poll. With one race under their belts, the Green Terror ranks 15th in terms of total poll points. McDaniel runners took first, third, and fourth place in the Baltimore Metro Invitational on September 2nd. Several fall teams got their first chance to put it all together against an opponent this afternoon. The field hockey team hosted York College, volleyball hosted Hood and Washington, while the football team took to the road for a scrimmage at Salisbury. Today was the final tune-up for each of the teams with the regular season rapidly approaching. If Katrina cooperates, McDaniel field hockey will open the season here on Thursday with the College of Notre Dame. Men's Soccer will travel to Lancaster Bible that same afternoon, while volleyball will open its season later that evening at Neumann.

Four years of work carried out primarily by current and former Green Terror athletes has culminated in the most comprehensive compilation of McDaniel College athletic records ever assembled. Millions of keystrokes of data entry and countless hours of tedious research have been narrowed down to one central spot on the web.

And there is still more to come.

Over the next few days, additional track & field records will be worked in, as well as top ten times for swimming. Over the course of the coming academic year, tennis and men's golf records will be complied and added in as well, while baseball pitching stats from 1932 through 1970 will be tabulated and factored in too.

Summer's Over

The calendar may say August. The thermometer might read like August, but for McDaniel's fall athletes, the summer is officially over. The Green Terror football team got back into the swing of things on a hot and hazy Westminster afternoon. They are the first of the teams to descend on campus for the 2005-2006 academic year.

The field hockey and volleyball teams are McDaniel's next arrivals, with the squads slated to make their way onto campus this Thursday, and onto the field and court on Friday. Saturday will see the arrival of the men's soccer team fresh off of its European swing. The cross country team arrives on Saturday as well. The women's soccer team, also coming back from Europe, will round out the return of fall sports on Sunday, August 21st.

Terror Women's Hoops Team Posts Third Best GPA in Nation

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its 2004-2005 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College. The awards recognize teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2004-05 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.

Notably amongst the top 25 was the McDaniel College women's team, which placed third in Division III with a team Grade Point Average of 3.561. Only York College and Messiah finished ahead of McDaniel, the two-time defending Centennial Conference Champions. The only other Centennial school to break into the top 25 was Muhlenberg, falling in at 18th.

McDaniel's girls didn't take it easy in the classroom last season either. The 15 player, 2004-2005 roster featured a dual-major of Biology and Biochemistry, two additional Biology majors, two Mathematics majors, and a Chemistry major.

Workin' for a Livin'

Everybody has those mornings where the alarm clock goes off, and the overwhelming urge to do just about anything besides work sets in. Some people just happen to have far fewer of those days than others. Former Green Terror football players, Justin Sheridan and Dan Gadd, who earned six Centennial rings between them) are some of those people.

While they may be two of the busiest people in the working world this time of year, you won't hear any complaints about long hours. That's because they are cashing paychecks earned working in the game that they love.

For Gadd, a short commute across sunny Jacksonville, Florida, lands him at Alltel Stadium, home of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. He is the Multimedia Specialist for the Jacksonville Jaguars, or more specifically jaguars.com.

It's a pretty sweet gig that grants Gadd sideline access to all of the Jags games, both home and away, and allows him the creative latitude at work most can only dream of. So, you might ask, what exactly is a Multimedia Specialist?

"To be honest, I couldn’t tell you myself," laughs Gadd. " I’d never heard of that title until I was one. Basically I have to be able to do a little bit of everything for jaguars.com including writing code, graphic design, content management and writing."

But his primary responsibility is video content. He shoots, edits, produces, and sometimes even hosts video features including in-studio segments, highlight packages and press conferences.

It's a job Gadd began training for during his own football career on the Hill. While his teammates were catching up on classwork, sleep, or their golf game on the Monday afternoon off, Gadd was in the tiny TV studio, editing VHS game film between two VCRs into a highlight reel for his weekly coaches show with the Terror's head coach, Tim Keating. His show was so successful that the local cable operator picked it up for broadcast.

Gadd now works with state-of-the-art digital video equipment, and McDaniel has since added a high-tech studio of its own, but Gadd certainly wouldn't trade his hours in the basement of Rouzer for the world at this point. Those long hours prepared him for his new long hours, but Gadd doesn't sweat punching the clock.

"Working in the NFL can be a very hectic and sometimes stressful job," he concedes. "But hey, I’m working in football so I love every minute of it!"

Sheridan is no stranger to stress himself. He stays extraordinarily busy as Director of Football Operations at Northwestern University. It's a great job title, but a tough one by every stretch of the imagination. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of a Division I football program, Sheridan's hand is involved in just about every aspect of Wildcats' football.

Aside from coordination the team's pre-season training camp, currently underway at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Sheridan is the primary point of contact for on-campus constituencies, as well as outside vendors. He also oversees the team's travel arrangements, evaluates prospective talent, hosts interested NFL personnel, and directs the Wildcats summer football camp.

Sheridan wears many caps in his day-to-day life, but is ultimately the gatekeeper between Head Coach Randy Walker, and the rest of the world. He allows Walker to wrap himself in a worry-free football cocoon.

"Everyday is different," says Sheridan. "There is always something new to begin, or a new issue or set of problems to conquer.

The job is not all paper pushing, phone calls, and long hours -- Sheridan's life is devoid of both a cubicle or a sense of 9 to 5. In his position, Western Maryland's old number 9 experiences Division I football up close everyday, particularly Saturdays.

"It sounds corny, but I still get that rush when we come out of the tunnel and take the field," says Sheridan. "I enjoy being a part of the team."

And it is for that reason Sheridan still smiles when the alarm clock shakes him from his sleep. Waking up in his Lincoln Park neighborhood, which he describes as "a great place to live" is another, and it seems Sheridan is putting down roots in the Windy City.

Despite his preference for thin crust to the Chi-town deep dish, the native of rural Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, is becoming a full-fledged Chicagoan. He prefers the Cubbies to his hometown Pirates, but hasn't sold out his Steelers for the "Da Bears" just yet.

"The Bears are growing on me though," Sheridan admits. "And there is no doubt I am a Bulls guy." That may have something to do with the fact that his new bride, Kristen, who he met at Northwestern, is one of the Chicago Luvabulls dancers.

Just one more reason for Sheridan to smile at that pesky alarm clock.

McDaniel Given Consideration in D3football.com's Preseason Poll

McDaniel College was not in the top 25, but was one of four schools to receive votes in the D3football.com Preseason Poll. The D3football.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly throughout the regular season and NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Cramp NJ State Amateur Champ... Again

Her name is attached to approximately 90 percent of the records in McDaniel's book. She has twice been named an All-American, and has four Centennial team and individual championships to show for her playing days at McDaniel.

She is far from done.

Kelly Cramp won the 2005 New Jersey State Amateur Championship, taking the title for the second time in three years. She now has her sights set on the pros, and the Newark Star-Ledger has the account of a tight championship showdown.

Scott S. Bair Stadium has received a fresh coat of paint, fan barriers have been erected, and the new sod on the practice fields is beginning to root.

It's that time of year again.

Bird fans will soon flock to Westminster in a Hitchcockian swarm of purple & black in order to get a first look at the 2005 edition of the Baltimore Ravens. This year's camp, the tenth in as many years at McDaniel, gets underway on August 1st.

McDaniel's hilltop campus has long been the summer home of Baltimore football. Colts legends Johnny Unitas, Art Donovan, and Raymond Berry worked out the off-season kinks in Westminster decades before the likes of Kyle Boller, Jonathan Ogden, and Ray Lewis took to the field.

McDaniel Live!
Following your favorite team just got easier. The full slate of WTTR AM 1470 football and basketball broadcasts, and several home men's and women's lacrosse games will be broadcast live during the 2005-2006 seasons. Terror fans will also have the chance to keep up with their team during a live weekly show, which will host coaches, athletes, and others involved in McDaniel's sports world.

All of the broadcasts will be carried live (and will be archived) by broadcastmonsters.com, one of the world's top Internet audio streaming service providers. The company's president is a 1999 Western Maryland graduate and former baseball player, Sean O'Connor.

In addition to live broadcasts, the Green Terror will offer live box scores and text play-by-play for select men's and women's soccer, field hockey, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and men's and women's lacrosse.

Weather permitting, McDaniel's field hockey team will play the first live contest of the year when it takes on the College of Notre Dame on Thursday, November 1st at 4:00pm. As the schedules stand now, 18 games will be available live this fall.
